What are ionic liquids?

Ionic liquids are salts with a melting point below 100 °C. Their most important properties are:

non-measurable vapor pressureonon-explosive
thermally robust (up to 250 °C)
versatile solvents

able to dissolve many compounds
form two phases with many solvents and substrates or products

Due to their large variety in possible cat- and anions they offer a large potential for solvent engineering in (bio)catalysis, electrochemistry, downstream processing etc. Typical cat- and anions are shown below. Very often, they are based on imidazolium cations. Other applications are in electrochemistry, solar cells ... .
